Sample jar, clove sample
Sample of cloves imported to London from Penang (off the coast of Malaya. From the Middle Ages onwards, cloves wre a highly valued commodity. After 1600 they were imported by the East India Company. Cloves from Penang were considered of better quality than those from Amboyna in the Spice Islands.
