Printed Ephemera — 1851
Admission ticket for the Royal Vauxhall gardens
This ticket was for admission to a ‘Grand Day and Night Fete’ on either 21st or 22nd July 1851, a charity event, raising funds for the Licensed Victuallers School. This school was established in 1803 in Kennington, to provide education for the children of those working in the licensed drinks trade. The ticket provided admission for two children and cost half a crown, the equivalent of roughly £4 today. The gardens were closed following the bankruptcy of the owners in Sept 1840. They reopened the following year but permanently closed in 1859
