Port & River — 1618
Keystone, coat of arms
This stone fragment is carved with the lower half of the Coat of Arms of the East India Company and depicts the three sailing ships that featured on the Company's arms until 1709. Originally featuring the complete coat of arms the carved stone was probably placed over the main gateway to the company's shipyard at Blackwall when it opened in 1618. The company sold the yard in 1656 but East Indiamen continued to be built there under the new owners until 1831. This incomplete coat of arms was discovered by chance during the eventual closure of Blackwall yard in 1987.
