This ostrich egg was imported into London in the 19th century, probably to meet the growing demand for scientific curios. Even in the 17th century, the large egg of the Ostrich was regarded as a wonderful and mysterious object. So much so that the pirate William Kidd retained at least one as plunder from one of the vessels he captured in the Indian Ocean in the 1690s.
