Printed Ephemera — 1920
Bank ledger, accounts ledger
Bank ledger listing the financial accounts of the London confectionery firm Smith Kendon for the year 1920. The ledger, compiled by the firm's bank Coutts and Company is stored within a protective cream folder. Written on the cover in red ink is 'To be given up under cover'. In black ink is 'Mrs S. Smith and Co'.
Founded in 1780 the firm of Smith Kendon manufactured a range of confectionery, jams and medicinal products including their famous ‘Altoids’ breath mints. In the 1860s the firm moved to 128-132 Borough High Street, Southwark, where it remained until 1974. This ledger was one of several items donated to the Museum of London by the firm when it closed its London premises and moved to Wales in 1974.
