WSPU exhibition stand

Women's Social and Political Union Exhibition stand. The image was probably taken in February 1908 as the Women's Parliament was taking place at Caxton Hall. The stand selling propaganda material and the Votes for Women newspaper was possibly erected in the entrance of the Hall throughout the durationof the three day event that took place between 11th and 13th February. This event was organised by the Women's Social and Political Union to discuss the Enfranchisment Bill that was hoped would be introduced into Parliament that session. The message on the small notice behind the Women that reads 'we demand the vote on the same terms as it is or may be granted to men' was also printed on the admission tickets for this event that was attended by Suffragettes from all over the country. The angry delegations to Westminster that followed the Women's Parliament sessions resulted in several scuffles with the police and the arrest of many Suffragettes including Emmeline Pankhurst.

Christina Broom, trading as Mrs Albert Broom, was a pioneering professional photographer and is considered to be the UK's first woman press photographer. Broom's extensive photographic work spans the activities of the suffrage movement in London, street views, military figures and actions of the Household Division including the First World War period, sporting events and the Royal Family.
