Quick's Entire New Speech for the 5th of November
Broadside ballad entitled 'Quick's entire new speech for the 5th of November' The seven verse ballad is printed in two columns surrounded by a border of woodcut engravings illustrating the story of Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot. Broadside ballads commemorating the annual celebration of Guy Fawkes night were hugely popular. The writing, printing and selling of the ballads that usually included a Guy Fawkes speech began in October in preparation for the bonfire celebrations on 5th November. In order to boost sales publishers attempted to vary the speeches from year to year. In this example the publisher JV Quick announces in the title of his broadside that this year he is publishing an entirely 'new speech for the 5th of November.'
Broadside ballads were printed by small back street printers primarily based in the Seven Dials area of London and then sold by ballad hawkers trading on London's streets. The ballad writers would receive little reward from the printers for their efforts, reportedly sometimes only a few pints of ale.
