Paintings, Prints & Drawings — C. 1701-1800
Oliver Cromwell
This half-length portrait of Oliver Cromwell depicts the Lord Protector of England, Scotland and Ireland facing to the left so that he is seen in profile. He is dressed in full armour with a plain white collar.
This portrait, like many others of Cromwell, is based on a miniature portrait, painted from life, by the artist Samuel Cooper. However, this portrayal of Cromwell differs from others as it focuses on the sitter's receding hairline. The composition is framed within a feigned oval.
