'Mush-fakers' and Ginger-beer makers
A ginger beer seller, left, and a 'mush-faker', or seller of used umbrellas, Clapham Common, c. 1877. Ginger beer was simple and cheap to make but required a large vessel in which to boil the water and ginger. Unscrupulous venders would resort to making their brew in the large communal copper tubs used for washing clothes. Mush-fakers repaired umbrellas and collected discarded ones beyond repair in order to combine the good bits of two or more to make a working one which he could then sell.
