The Temperance Sweep
John Day, a chimney sweep, c. 1877. Once a heavy drinker, Day gave up alcohol and his business subsequently prospered. By this time there were around 2,000 chimney sweeps in London. From a series of 37 photographs published in the book, 'Street Life in London' (1877), with text written by Thomson and the journalist Adolphe Smith.
