Street Advertising
Bill-stickers, c. 1877. Advertising hoardings were a common feature of Victorian London and an army of men were employed to paste up posters on them. The two largest contractors were Messrs Willing and Co. and Mr Thomas Smith. There were also a large number of 'fly-pasters' who posted bills indescriminately wherever they could find a spot not reserved by a contractor. From a series of 37 photographs published in the book, 'Street Life in London' (1877), with text written by Thomson and the journalist Adolphe Smith.
