The Black Friar 'Mum' House
Thomas Sutton issued this trade token, worth a penny for his premises, the Black Friar coffee house or tavern, in Blackfriars.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 349; Obv inscription: THO. SVTTON. AT. YE. BLACK. FRYER (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A friar standing holding a crucifix and rosary, with 'mum house' on either side (in field, text in cursive script) ; Rev inscription: IN.BLACKE.FRYERS.1671 (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS 1D (in two lines of Roman capitals).
Mum was a kind of beer originally brewed in Brunswick.
