Portrait of Elizabeth Cromwell
This portrait by Robert Walker is said to be of Elizabeth Cromwell, the mother of Oliver Cromwell, the Lord Protector of Great Britain. Formerly Elizabeth Steward, Elizabeth married Robert Cromwell and gave birth to Oliver, her second son, in 1599. She died in 1654, around the time this portrait was painted.
Framed by a feigned oval, Elizabeth is shown at bust length wearing a puritan-style dress with a black snood, pearl necklace and white voile shawl. A prolific painter, Walker was influenced by the court painter Anthony Van Dyck. Parliamentarians, including Cromwell himself, were among Walker's chief patrons.
