Wood, worked wood, scoop
Long shallow scoop or spoon with carefully finished hollow bowl and a handle with a terminal in the form of a human head, possibly a Black African man. The bearded male head has rounded cheeks and deep set eyes, with prominent lips, nose and ears. Although the portrayal of ethnic types is a recurring theme in Roman art, several of these features are also seen on images of the mythological figure Silenus (companion of Dionysus, the god of wine). Made from boxwood (buxus sempervirens).
