Talbot; Earls of Shrewsbury
Livery badge in the form of a hunting dog known as a talbot. Noble families often chose symbols that were puns on their names. The talbot (an extinct breed of hunting dog) was chosen by the Talbot Earls of Shrewsbury. The symbol was particularly associated with John Talbot, First Earl of Shrewsbury who died in 1453. A contempory poem described him as 'Talbott our goode dogge'. Supporters of the noble families fighting for power during the Wars of the Roses wore badges to show their allegiance.
