Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval, 14th century
Seal matrix
Circular seal matrix with a lug on the back. This is the seal of Nicholas de Warwick (Nicholas of Warwick) and has an inscription around the edge: '*S'NIChOLAIDEWARWIK'. In London people were often known by 'surnames' describing where they originally came from, such as William of Bedford (a suspected burglar who died in Newgate prison in 1322).
