Saxon & Medieval — Early Saxon; early-mid 5th century
Pedestal vase
This handmade vase with a pedestal base was found in a grave in the Anglo-Saxon cemetery at Mitcham. When Anglo-Saxon people died they were usually buried in their best clothes with items they might need in the afterlife, perhaps donated by grieving relatives. The quantity and value of these 'grave-goods' reflected the people's wealth and status.
