Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; late 15th century
John Schorn
Pilgrim badge from the shrine of John Schorn, probably from Windsor (his remains were moved there in 1478). John Schorn was the miracle-working rector of North Marston in Buckinghamshire from around 1282 until his death in 1315. His tomb became a popular pilgrimage destination, particularly in the 15th and early 16th centuries. Schorn became famous as an exorcist who trapped the Devil in a boot. This badge depicts John Schorn as a standing figure in a long robe. He is holding a long thigh boot in his right hand and a book in his left. Schorn’s head is surrounded by a halo. To his right is the Devil’s head which has bat-like wings on either side. The pin from the back of the badge has survived.
