Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; 14th-15th century
Christ
Pilgrim badge from an unknown shrine. This badge depicts Jesus Christ on the cross. The limbs of the cross are missing but Christ’s figure has survived. He wears a knee-length, long-sleeved robe with a decorative collar and a circular ornament on his chest. Around his head is a large halo. This badge probably commemorates a holy rood. Before the Reformation in the 16th century, every church had a large crucifix, known as a rood, on display. Some roods were associated with miracles and became the focus for pilgrimages.
