Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; mid 15th century
Dagger, rondel dagger
Rondel dagger with a triangular blade (a rondel dagger is one where the pommel and guard take the form of discs set at right angles to the tang). The guard and pommel are both in the form of two hexagonal plates, the uppermost plate of the pommel being slightly pyramidal. The edge of the tang is gilt and rilled diagonally. The grip is missing but is now restored. It was held in place by four large brass tubular rivets. There is a maker's mark on the blade.
