Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; 14th-15th century
Pitchfork
Iron pitchfork, which would have been used to lift up hay and pitch it (throw it) so the hay could be collected together in stacks or loaded onto carts. London craftworkers made tools for use in farming villages around the city. Country people also came to London to buy farm equipment, ploughs, carts and carthorses at the cattle market in Smithfield.
