Lead seal impression, also known as a bulla. Lead seals like this come from documents called 'indulgences'. Issued by the Pope, these were believed to reduce the time the dead person's soul had to spend in Purgatory. This seal is from the Hospital of St John of Jerulsalem.
Lead bulla of Geoffrey (?de Donjon), Master of the Knights Hospitaller of St John of Jerusalem. Obv: figure of Master kneeling to right before a patriarchal cross, legend around in Lombardic letters '+GAVFRIDVS:CVSTOS'. Rev: shrouded body lying on a bier; above, tabernacle with three domes, lamp hanging in centre; legend around in Lombardic letters: '+hOSPITALIS:IhERUSALEM'.
