Saxon & Medieval — Early Medieval; late 13th century
Coffin lid
This slab of Purbeck marble from the site of St Swithin's church, near Cannon Street station, shows a woman, with a dog at her feet, holding a heart. It is inscribed in French: '+ LE: QWER: IONE: KEFU: | LA FEM[ME: DE:] SIRE: FU | LKE: DE: SEINT: E[DMONDS: | GIT]: ICI: PRIEZ: PUR: LALME' - 'The heart of Joan, who was the wife of Sir Fulk de St Edmunds, lies here; pray for her soul'. Joan probably died elsewhere and was buried there, and her heart was brought back to London for burial in her local parish church. Fulk de St Edmunds was sheriff of London in 1289-90, and died in 1307; Joan was his second wife.
