Saxon & Medieval — Early Saxon; 6th century
Beaker; cup
When Anglo-Saxon people died they were usually buried in their best clothes with items they might need in the afterlife, perhaps donated by grieving relatives. The quantity and value of these 'grave-goods' reflected the people's wealth and status. Goods range from fine gold jewellery and imported glassware to handmade pots like this one from the grave of a woman in the Saxon burial ground in Mitcham (London Borough of Merton). The only other objects in her grave were a pair of shears and a small knife.
