Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; late 14th century
Shoe
During the medieval period children's shoes were similar to those worn by adolescents and adults. The only exceptions were the exaggerated, long, pointed 'poulaines', which were worn only by adults. This right foot child's ankle-shoe dates to the late 1300s and has a slightly pointed toe. The tip of the toe is worn. It is fastened at the front with a leather thong. It is complete, including the rand, the strip of leather inserted between the upper and the sole. It was found at Baynard's Castle Dock, near Blackfriars, London.
