Saxon & Medieval — Saxo-Norman; early 11th century
Strap fitting
This strap-fitting linked three leather straps, and probably formed part of a sword belt. It was found in 1878 in the Temple, off Fleet Street. It dates to the late 900s or early 1000s, and is of a type known from Viking graves, particularly in the Baltic area of Scandinavia. It may have belonged to one of the Vikings who attacked London in the early 1000s, or to a follower of King Cnut, the Danish king of England (1016-35).
