Saxon & Medieval — Saxo-Norman; 11th century
Mount, stirrup mount
The Vikings' reputation as sailors is well-known: their skill as horsemen is less widely appreciated. This mount decorated the attachment of a Viking stirrup to its strap. Horses were important and many pieces of riding equipment have been found in Viking graves in Scandinavia. Its design is in the 'Urnes' style (named after a type of carving found in a church in Urnes in Norway) and shows an animal wound together with a snake. It may represent the battle between good (the animal) and evil (the snake).
