Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; mid-late 14th century
John Schorn
Pilgrim badge from the shrine of John Schorn, either from North Marston in Buckinghamshire or Windsor (his remains were moved to Windsor in 1478). John Schorn was the miracle-working rector of North Marston from around 1282 until his death in 1315. His tomb became a popular pilgrimage destination, particularly in the 15th and early 16th centuries. Schorn became famous as an exorcist who trapped the Devil in a boot. This lozenge-shaped badge depicts John Schorn as a crude standing figure in a long robe. To his left is a long thin boot and to his right is a square object, possibly a book (Schorn is often depicted holding a book as well as his boot). There are trefoil crockets at each corner of the lozenge.
