Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; late 15th century
Mont St Michel
Part of a pilgrim badge of St Michael, probably from the shrine at Mont-Saint-Michel in France. The cult of St Michael began on that site in the early 8th century after the saint appeared to the Bishop of Avranches in a dream and asked him to build a chapel in his honour on Mont Tombe, which later became known as Mont-Saint-Michel. St Michael was an archangel who led an army against Satan. This appears to be a section from the circular back plate of a thin brass badge. It is decorated with flower petals and a heart. A complete badge of this type was found at London Bridge in 1980 and had a small front plate riveted to the back plate. The front plate depicted St Michael slaying Satan in the form of a dragon and was smaller than the back plate so that the petals could be seen behind it.
