Jar, cremation urn
A large round-bodied jar, or face pot, in Verulamium Region Coarse White-slipped ware, complete but with handles missing. The jar would originally have had three handles. There are concentric grooves around the body with a human face applied above. The nose is missing but the eyes and eyebrows are clearly defined.
This jar was found at the site of a Roman cemetery and contained cremated bones. Cremated bones were deposited in everyday cooking pots or in specially purchased urns such as facepots.
