Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; early-mid 15th century
Finger ring, posy ring
A gold ring of D-shaped section, the exterior decorated with leaves, originally alternating in black and white enamel, the interior inscribed in black letter 'nul autre' ('none other').
See Dr Joan Evans 'English Posies and Posy Rings', Oxford, 1931, p 11 - with the citation to the Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries, 2nd Series, iii. 269. The small size suggests it was a child's ring, perhaps for a bethrothal.
