Saxon & Medieval — Mid 13th century-mid 14th century
Horseshoe
Horseshoe with broad branches tapering to the heels. It has small rectangular nail-holes with countersunk slots (four holes on each side, eight in total). There are two spiral-clenched nails still in their holes. The ends of the horseshoe (calkins) are double-folded. Horseshoes were fitted by 'marshals' who were men, and sometimes women, whose job also involved tending sick horses. Juliana 'la Mareschale' was arrested for assaulting another woman in 1243.
