Saxon & Medieval — Medieval
Sheath
Small frgament of leather of unusual form, which may or may not be part of a sheath. It is decorated with rows of small, fine holes and also with areas of raised or embossed decoration, formed by compressing the backround. The design is abstract and of an unusual form. This piece may have been a decorative panel or side pocket on a sheath or may come from a completely different object.
This piece of leather was recovered from the soil removed from the archaeological excavations in the early 1980s at the Lorry Park for old Billingsgate fish market on Lower Thames Street in the City of London. The soil was taken to a spoil tip in Dagenham and artefacts were recovered there.
