Kensington Gardens - The Round Pond
A woman and children pose for the camera stood beside The Round Pond in Kensington Gardens. George II added the Round Pond in 1730; as seven-acre ornamental lake enjoyed by model yaght enthusiasts. Broom demonstrates here her interest in the inclusion of people and everyday activity in order to bring the image to life. She produced a series of street views to sell as picture postcards; the popular format being her primary commercial output.
Christina Broom, trading as Mrs Albert Broom, was a pioneering professional photographer and is considered to be the UK's first woman press photographer. Broom's extensive photographic work spans the activities of the suffrage movement in London, street views, military figures and actions of the Household Division including the First World War period, sporting events and the Royal Family.
