The Elephant and Castle
This trade token, worth a farthing, for his business at the sign of the Elephant, in Temple Bar without, Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 3061; Obv inscription: THE.ELEVANT.WITHOVT (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = An elephant with a castle on its back (in field); Rev inscription: TAMPEL.BARR.1650 (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = G.B.R. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
Temple Bar formed a divisional bar between the ward of Farringdon, in the City of London, and Westminster, Middlesex; the area that lay in Westminster, now lies in the City of Westminster.
