The King's Head
Matthew Marriott issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business at the sign of the King's Head, at the end of St Martin's, Aldersgate.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 2650; Obv inscription: MATT. MARRIOTT. AT. THE. KINGS (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A crowned bust of Charles II (in field); Rev inscription: HEAD. AT. THE. END. OF. ST. MARTINS (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALF / PENY (in three lines of Roman capitals, in field).
Charles II, was King of England from 1660 - 1685. See also token number 9452 in the Sylloge of Coins of the British Isles, 62, The Norweb Collection: Tokens of the British Isles 1575-1750, Part VIII - Middlesex and Uncertain Pieces. The token was issued from either St Martin's Lane or St Martin le Grand in the ward of Aldersgate, in the City of London.
