The Three Greyhounds
Edward Briscoe issued this trade token, worth a farthing, for his business in Lothbury.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 1832; Obv inscription: EDWARD / BRISCO / 1670 (in three lines of Roman capitals, in field); Rev inscrition: IN.LOTHBVRY (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = Three greyhounds (in field).
The Three Greyhounds depicted on the token, are part of the Briscoe family arms: Argent three greyhounds courant in pale Sable, see The Visitiation of London, Anno Domini 1633, 1634 and 1635 made by Sr Henry St George; ed. Joseph Jackson Howard and Joseph Lemuel Chester (London, 1880 vi., p.103), as cited in, token number 7298 in the Sylloge of Coins of the British Isles, 59, The Norweb Collection: Tokens of the British Isles 1575-1750, Part VII - City of London. Lothbury lies in Broad Street Ward and Coleman Street Ward, in the City of London.
