The Tallow Chandlers' Arms
John Rowland, a mealman (someone who deals in meal crops, such as oats), issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business in Leadenhall Street.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 1680; Obv inscription: IOHN.ROWLAND.MEALMAN (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = The Tallowchandlers' arms and I.R (initials in Roman capitals on either side of arms, in field); Rev inscription: IN.LEADENHALL.STREETE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALFE / PENNY / 1669 (in four lines of Roman capitals, in field).
The arms of the Worshipful Company of Tallow Chandlers are: On a field of six pieces of azure and argent three doves argent membered gules, each holding in its beak an olive branch (J. Bromley, The Armorial Bearings of the Guilds of London: a record of the heraldry of the surviving companies with historical notes; with...[illustrations] by Heather Child...(London, 1960).
