Archaeology — Middle Saxon; 8th century
Pin beater
Pin beater with incised decoration of three lines at each end and cross hatching in the middle. Pin beaters were used when weaving cloth on a loom - the weavers would push the threads down firmly with their beaters. The decoration on this beater may have been designed to give a better grip. Foreign merchants came to Lundenwic to buy English woollen cloth. Finds of clay loom-weights, bone pin-beaters and spindle whorls show that Londoners were spinning wool and weaving cloth: some for home use, but some probably for export.
