The Hen and Chickens
Dorothy Sell issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for her business at the sign of the Hen and Chickens in Hammond's Quay.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 1310; Obv inscription: DOROTHY.SELL.AT.THE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A hen and chickens (in field); Rev inscription: ON.HAMONS.KEY.1668 (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HER / HALF / PENY / D.S (in four lines of Roman capitals, in field).
Dorothy Sell, took over her husband, John Sell's, business when he passed away in 1664, see Kenneth Rogers, Signs and Taverns round about Old London Bridge, including Gracechurch street, Fenchurch Street and Leadenhall Street (London, 1937), pg. 40. There is a token issued by John Sell for this business in the museum collection, see NN17615. Hammond's Quay lay off Lower Thames Street, in Tower Ward, in the City of London.
