The Unicorn
William Warde issued this trade token, worth a penny, for his business at the Unicorn tavern, in New Fleet Street.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 1103. Obv inscription: WILL.WARDE.AT.THE. VNICORNE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = 1D (in field); Rev inscription: IN.NEW.FLEETE.STREETE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A unicorn (in field).
The location on the token probably refers to new buildings erected on Fleet Street, to the east of Fetter Lane, after the Great Fire in 1666, see Henry A. Harben, A dictionary of London (London, 1918). Fleet Street lies in the ward of Farringdon Without, in the City of London.
