Printed Ephemera — 1906-1912
Photograph of Suffragette Emily Wilding Davison
Photograph of Emily Wilding Davison in her graduation robes. She obtained two first class honours degrees in her lifetime, one from St Hugh’s College, Oxford and the other from the London University. In 1906 she joined the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) and gained a reputation as a militant campaigner. She was arrested and imprisoned on a number of occasions and also took part in hunger strikes. During the 1911 census she hid in a cupboard in the Palace of Westminster so that she could claim residence in the House of Commons. Davison was fatally injured when she stepped in front of the King’s Horse during the Epsom Derby in 1913.
