Photograph of Annie Kenney in the dress of a working woman with a shawl covering her head, signed by her. Annie was one of the few working class women to lead the Suffragette movement. She was born in Saddleworth, Lancashire, the fifth of 11 children and for a short period began working in a mill at the age of 10 to help her family finances. She was one of the first women to be imprisoned for the cause. At a public meeting she Winston Churchill, ‘If you are elected, will you do your best to make Women’s Suffrage a Government measure?’. For this she was removed from the meeting, charged with obstruction and served a 3 day sentence in Holloway prison.
