Our Lady of Boulogne
Pilgrim badge from the shrine of Our Lady of Boulogne, Boulogne-sur-Mer in France. This shrine had a miracle-working statue of the Virgin Mary which was said to have been brought to the church by sea in a boat without any crew. This badge is in the form of a stamped sheet of copper alloy decorated with an image of the Virgin in the centre. She holds the infant Jesus Christ on her right side. On either side of her are the masts of a ship hung with sails which are dotted with fleurs lys (one of the symbols of the Virgin) and the sky above her is filled with stars. The ship itself would have been at the base of the badge but it is now missing. This flat badge would have been sewn onto a pilgrim’s clothes or hat, or stitched onto the pages of a prayer book.
