The Mermaid
Robert Cash issued this trade token, worth a farthing, for his premises, the Mermaid tavern in Billingsgate, Billingsgate Ward, City of London.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 198; Obv inscription: ROB.CASH.1663 (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A mermaid (in field); Rev inscription: AT.BILLINGSGATE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = R.A.C. (triad of intials in Roman capitals, in field).
There is another token for the Mermaid tavern at Billingsgate in the museum collection, NN16492, though from a different issuer. It seems that Robert Cash may have changed the name of his establishment to the Queen's Head sometime after 1663, see NN16490 in the museum collection.
