St Etheldreda
Part of a pilgrim badge of St Etheldreda (also known as St Audrey) from Ely in Cambridgeshire. St Etheldreda was the 7th-century daughter of an East Anglian king and the abbess of a convent, which stood on the site where Ely cathedral was later built. Her shrine was popular with London pilgrims and one of her miracles was that of freeing a man from a London gaol (his fetters were put on display in Ely cathedral). This badge depicts St Etheldreda as a standing figure, wearing a long robe and holding a book in her right hand. Above the book is the faint outline of a large brooch on her chest. Her head and the left hand are missing.
