Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; late 14th century
Archer; Huntsman
Badges celebrating feats of arms and outdoor pursuits were popular. They harked back to a past golden age of chivalry and were perhaps worn by young men who liked to think of themselves as knights. The huntsman on this badge is dressed in fine style with a chaplet (band) around his head and jewelled garter above his knee to hold up his hose. With his hunting horn slung over his shoulder, he is preparing to shoot his barbed arrow towards his prey.
