Vote For Women, Mrs Sproson
Postcard with photographic portrait beneath which is printed 'Mrs Sproson. Women's Freedom League' and the organisation's address. Above is 'Votes For Women'.
Emma Sproson (1867-1936) met Emmeline Pankhurst through the Independent Labour Party, and joined the Women's Social and Political Union in 1906. Despite having two young children, she was imprisoned twice for participating in suffragette deputations to parliament. In 1907 Sproson broke away from the WSPU, with other members, to form the Women's Freedom League, and became chair of the Wolverhampton branch. In 1911, as a member of the Tax Resistance League, Sproson refused to pay for a dog licence. She spent a week in prison and the police shot her dog.
