Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; late 14th-early 15th century
Christ
Pewter pilgrim badge or devotional badge showing the figure of crucified Christ. Christ wears a crown and a robe with a large cross in the centre. His beard is forked. The nails going through his hands and feet are clearly seen. The cross itself is decorated with simple cross-hatching. Christ is usually depicted wearing a robe before the 11th century so later badges showing a robed Christ are likely to be commemorating an early rood (large crucifix from a church). The rood depicted here is unknown.
