The Stationers' Arms
Edward Grove issued this trade token, worth a farthing, for his business in the Barbican.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 115; Obv inscription: EDWARD.GROVE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = The Stationers' Arms (in field); Rev inscription: IN.BARBICAN.1665 (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = E.G.G. (triad of initials of Roman capitals, in field).
The arms of the Worshipful Company of Stationers are: Azure on a chevron between three books with clasps all or an eagle volant gules with a nimbus or between two roses gules leaved vert; in chief issuing out of a cloud proper rediated or a holy spirit wings displayed argent with a nimbus (J. Bromley, The Armorial Bearings of the Guilds of London: a record of the heraldry of the surviving companies with historical notes; with...[illustrations] by Heather Child...(London, 1960). The Barbican is in Aldersgate Ward and the ward of Cripplegate Without, in the City of London.
